Basics of HVAC Systems

There are a wide range of HVAC systems, depending on the design. The Heat Exchanger
This part of the HVAC system is located in the furnace, though it is not part of it. It works on its own, as it adds heat to the air coming from the combustion chamber.

The Furnace
The furnace is the central part of the HVAC system. It is located at the base of the system. It is responsible for moving air from the heat exchanger to the air ducts. Taking an HVAC program will help you understand the system better and avoid confusing the furnace with boilers.

The Condensing Unit
The condensing unit is just like an evaporator coil, but it is used in an HVAC outdoor unit. It is located in a cube-shaped unit where it exchanges heat with air that passes through it. The condensing unit gives off heat.

The Evaporator Coil
This part of the furnace consists of a refrigerant that runs through it. The evaporator coil absorbs heat from the air passing through it and then blows cold air through the air ducts in the house.

The Refrigerant Tubes
These are metal tubes that connect the evaporator coil with the condensing coil, connecting outdoor and indoor HVAC units. The tubes contain cooling refrigerant of varying temperatures.

The Ductwork
This part of the HVAC system is used for moving air throughout the building. The air in the HVAC system enters through the sections of the ductwork and is distributed through other sections of the ductwork.

The Thermostat
The thermostat allows the user to control the temperature of the HVAC system.

The Heat Pump
This part of the HVAC system is essential during warm periods, as it takes heat from the inside to the outside. During cold times it does the opposite.

The Vents
Once the air is traveling through the ductwork, it enters the building through the vents. The vents are rectangular covers on the ceiling or floor to direct air into the house.
